Crit.it is a new service to allow University of Cumbria students to upload screenshots, poster frames, renders or scans of their work and get short, focused feedback on what needs to be improved.
Students can also Ask Questions of their peers, just in case they have a problem with something that good old Google can't fix!
Crit.it isn't moderated by or officially associated with the university or tutors, it's a completely separate entity designed to operate outside of the classroom.
Registered users can upload JPG/JPEG , PNG and GIF images of their work. Images should be under 2MB in size but can be of any resolution.
Crit.it resizes images to 720 pixels on the longest side, and creates two thumbnails at 150 pixels and 72 pixels, so for the best results, make sure your images are above 150 x 150 pixels.
Images must be filed under a category and you can choose if the image is public or not. We also provide a description field so that you can describe what you were attempting to achieve with the work, provide context, or just provide extra information for people giving feedback.
Tags are used to provide extra context for searches, for example: if you tag your image with “face, 3d, model, nose” somebody searching for “3d model of a face” would stumble across your image because you added those particular tags.
The click-through link is there to allow you to link to an external video or website that is directly related to your uploaded image. For example: you could upload a poster frame or promo image from your animation, and link to the animation on youtube.
Comments on Crit.it are limited to 150 characters. That’s roughly 4 or 5 sentences. Why do we do that? Well… the shorter the space the more thought you have to put into your comments. This, therefore, keeps tips & criticism brief but of the highest quality (or at least that’s the idea).
If you don’t have time to leave a comment, or don’t particularly have anything constructive to say, you can just hit the “like” button and register your positive opinion with a minimum of effort.
You can also use the “get feedback” button to send requests to people who you know might be able to help or provide you with great feedback. They’ll get an email letting them know that you want their opinion, and they'll also get a notice on their activity page.
Stuck with something? ask your fellow students for the answer! If they’re following you they’ll see your question pop up in their activity stream. And you’ll get an email if someone posts an answer to your question.
Don’t forget to search through the questions first, someone might have already had the same problem as you.
Keep track of your favourite artist's work with the 'watch' feature. Watching a user will make their most recent activity appear on your home page, a bit like the news feed on facebook. But 'watching' a user is one way, meaning if someone doesn't want to see your work on his or her home page, they don't have to.
Check out other people's work and offer as much helpful feedback as you can. And be nice! people can report you and if you're reported enough times you will have your account deactivated.
Your Crit.it profile is publicly viewable by anyone, so you can use your crit.it profile to showcase your work to potential employers, friends, family & more.
If you want to show them a particular image, just copy and paste the lovely short link from the address bar, and send it to them via Email, Instant messenger, or facebook. As long as the image is public, which you can set either after uploading or by going to “edit image”, they’ll be able to see it.
If you get stuck with something, discover that a feature on the site isn’t working correctly, or are having trouble, then feel free to send a message to support@crit.it and we’ll help you out.
Alternatively you can navigate to the Official Crit.it Account here on the site, and use the “contact” button to send us a message.
Please remember to include as much information as you can so that we can help you out.
